those are pretty much the two ideas that hold my imagination the most. i really love the idea behind the scottish ogres but they might end up looking a bit too...civilised...for ogres.
i might run with the mongol idea and then add in some of the others for things like maneaters and such
i could do like a slayer maneater, a elflike swordmaster, etc. basically just rip off the elite sections of other armies.
