Re: unpainted armies If I play against someone with an unpainted army it's no big deal to me. If they bring that stuff to a tourney, well that's different.
Around here, a tournament isn't just a place where we get together to cream our opponents and brag later, it's more of a place where we can show off our latest projects and see who got the worst dice rolls. If a newcomer shows up with an army that has only a basecoat or nothing at all, nobody really cares. If you show up to 3 or more tourneys with the same army and no work has been put into it, you may not get in to the tourney if there's no room (never going to happen at the store I play at, we can do 10 or 12 tables in various parts of the store and the regular tourney goers only number around 8 - 12) I should probably also mention that our regular tourneys are 1 tourney a month, first month Fantasy, next month 40k, etc. So in 6 months time people around here would expect something to change....
Personally, I use other models as proxies to determine whether or not I like a unit, then buy it if I like it. After that the unit doesn't see the tabletop until they are completely done. I can't help it. My friend let me proxy a Daemon Prince back in 3rd edition, and told me it was okay to use it while it was WIP, but I just couldn't do it. I don't know why. Don't judge me!!
*Ahem* Anyway, this game is a hobby first, for a great deal of people, but some of us hobby-ers, this is just a game.
