If it is a single model (Independant character, Monsterous Creature, other Dread, etc. etc.) than the only way they could get to the rear is if they move around your dread in the movement phase and then assault, but if they start the assault in front of the Dread, then they have to charge the front. I will grab my BBB and see if I can't find specific page number for you to show your oppenant.

Page 37 of the BBB (big black book if you didn't know that is a common name for the 40k rule book). Carefully read through the Move Charging Units section. It states in there that they must move "using the shortest possible route"
