also, and alternative to the aformentioned vets is to use a cheap command squad or two...
termies just waded through your entire gun line? drop 3 plasma guns and a plasma pistol on 'em! (oh, and don't forget your medic...)
land raider wants to deploy a bunch of homicidal khornate possessed into your squishy lines? 2-3 meltaguns will knock that! (and much cheaper than the vets too!)
huge hoard of orks baying for your blood? 3 flamers is just plain funny!!!
if you feel like sacrificing an officer or two like this will hurt your overall moral, then make sure each infantry squad has a veteran sergeant!
also, you should still have your hq officer to anchor your main firebase, and honestly, who doesn't abuse iron discipline?!!
