depends what you want him to do. will he be added to the artillery as an extra crew to make it more accurate? if yes then just give him a repeater pistol to help out if your cannons get attacked. scared that your artillery will get attacked a lot? mount him on a mechanical steed and give him a repeater pistol and maybe pigeon bombs. or if you want a sniper go for the long rifle and put him in a unit of handgunners with a long rifle of their own.
