hmm...in my experience, the best tool for straight cuts is a thick razor blade with one end covered up with metal-it's pretty safe, just make sure you have like cereal box or something underneath so you don't cut your table or whatever...
but yea, just lay the model down flat, put the blade where you want to cut and push down kind of hard.
i think clippers won't give you as clean a cut either, but they are much easier on the hands :] good luck! :]
