well im using the information on typhus on the uk website for games workshop.

it said that mortarion was rushing towards terra to tell the emperor about the betrayal of his brothers. (by this time typhus had already turned) while in the warp mortarion had learned of the attack on magnus for the use of psyker powers. so typhus in order to keep the death guard in the warp killed the navigators and explained it away as they are users of a power the emperor has condemned. the ships the death guard and mortarion are on are now stranded in the warp long enough for the disease to rip through them forming the nurgle death guard. the death guard corpes rise and become the silent virulent marines they are now.

mind you this is the info the uk website has. and also remember many have declared that the horus hereasy novels go against what was once cannon.

dont quote me however. i might be mixing what i read with the flight of the eisenstien.
