Thousand Sons are not an easy army to use - they're definitely difficult for a beginner. But I used them straight from the beginning.
One thing that I find about this is you don't have any expectations and you don't know any other tactics, so you can start from scratch and not get them confused with any other Marine army. There are some general rules that need to be looked at when using them, though.
One is make sure you know the Mark of Tzeentch and all of its rules. Sometimes they will be your salvation, other times they will be your doom.
Another is three things that are off limits - Chosen, Possessed and Inferno Bolts. Inferno Bolts shouldn't be used because Wind of Chaos does the job much better. Chosen and Possessed... it's all too easy to spend 50+ points on a single model.
Also, look in the Book of Tzeentch about making normal rubric marines Terminators. Having a 2-wound terminator who can rapid fire, and then assault with a power weapon isn't something alot of things will be able to withstand.
See the Tactica thread if you need any more help, and don't be afraid to ask any question!
