132 sisters. That was all. 132 against a horde thousands strong. The Order of the Ardent Soul still held their ground upon the world of Ilano Secondus. The only remaining part of Hive Ilano Primus, the capital hive, was the spire. It contained a tiny landing pad, a small chapel, and a courtyard leading from below. They had stripped the grand balconies and walls of the courtyard and installed defendable platforms and fire positions. Holes bashed in the walls were made and then patched up, so sisters could swiftly punch through and purge their foe with bolter and chainsword. Now they waited for the enemy to make their final push. The enemy, of course, was the forces of Crot Skulltaker, Scourge of Kaschada. His corrupted battle barge, The Brass Throne, had suddenly appeared out of the warp 3 months ago. They landed in the outskirts of the city, ignoring the defense lasers that blew away the dreadclaw drop pods. The local PDF forces had quickly defected, and turned the defense lasers on the local Lightning fighter squadron attached to the hive!
Now the combined forces were in an orgy of slaughter. With noone to defend them, the populace had fled upward. The larger landing platform had been a mash of humanity as transport ships from neighboring hives desperately tried to rescue as many as they could. The weight of the people soon crushed the ancient support structure and it toppled into the hive, sending hundreds to their deaths. It soon did not matter, as Chaos Talon fighters shot down the fleeing transports.
When the Adeptus Sororitas had rallied it surviving forces and occupied the hive, Cannoness Briana had tearfully turned away hundreds of the mob. The chapel was packed to bursting with civilians and they could handle no more. They were left to the rampaging servants of Khorne. Inquisitor Lord Malakai had sent a desperate distress call that almost burnt out his astropath as the message fought through the warps influence, and now was not sure it had even reached anyone at all.
The stench of the warp was heavy in the air, hardening the resolve of the defenders. The Inquisitor's Techpriest triple checked his charges, three gun-servitors. Blessings from mars. The Sisters sung hymnals of the emporer, asking for his holy guidance to crush the hated servents of chaos.
The sound of chanting rose above the songs of the Sororitas. Praise to the blood god, whipping the traitor guardsmen and warped marines into a deeper, crazed frenzy of battle.
The forces of Khorne appeared over the ridge. Coherency long since forgotten, a mob of traitor PDF ran full speed at the servents of the emporer, wielding their lasguns and long, dripping knives. Though long out of range, they nevertheless shot at the Sisters. The shots that managed to reach them simply pinged off of their holy armour, nicking the white surface or singing their sky blue cloaks. War machines of the traitor forces advanced through the mob. Sentinals had been stripped of ranged firepower, fitted instead with flamers, chainswords and spikes. A leman russ belched smoke and rumbled through the mob, crushing several in the crews frenzy to see the emporers servents grinded beneath the tracks.
Cannoness Briana led the sisters in the final hymn before the traitors were in range, asking the emporer to guide their hands.
“Fire!”
the clarion call rang out and immediately the front ranks of PDF forces were cut down. The songs of praise to Him on the Throne continued through the slaughter, though drowned out by the hideous chanting. The sisters faith in the emperor meant that they in fact did not need the emperors help. simple bolter shots punched through the armor of the sentinals, killing the pilots or detonating the promethium, spreading the flaming gel through the horde. They toppled over, killing even more of the frenzied followers of chaos. If their fire held, it seemed like the sisters could hold off the horde. For now. Their ammunition could not last forever, though, and with the air dominated by chaos fighters, no help could come. Barring a miracle, of course.
