to the contrary of the romanticized belief, the Highlanders didn't come down to the Bruces aid just on the notion of freedom. The reason why Wallace failed in his rebellion was because he could offer them nothign other than throwing aside one Lords yoke to take up another. The Bruce offered them freedom from England, as well as coin and land. So, in a way, even the paymaster bit fits.
P.S. - Our local Faire started today, and the king of it is none other than a fellow 40K/Fantasy player (who portrays Robert the Bruce). In between a joust round I told him of this, and he says good luck and to ask any questions you have of accuracy to me, and if I don't know he will!
