Following Horus Heresy, the Sons of Terra were formed according to the Codex Astartes from Imperial Fist companies overrun on the far side of Terra by Traitors before taking further staggering losses in a fighting withdrawal to the Imperial Palace. Given the Landfall system to govern as a fief, they departed Terra with a repopulation fleet. What no one anticipated was that despite the Chapter's outward stoicism, a form of frantic madness and overwhelming sense guilt for their part in the Siege of Terra marked the entire chapter. Instead of going to Landfall, Chapter Master Lord Thyestes Grant diverted the fleet to an isolated Eldar Maiden World on the unstable edge of the Eye of Terra based on visions by Chief Librarian Isador Kennedy. Renaming the planet Redemption, the chapter fabricated terraforming satellites and conscripted the entire repopulation fleet to forcibly recreate the geography and layout of Terra as it appeared before the Heresy in exquisite detail. Over the next 500 years, the Chapter covertly raided nearby systems for workers and to populate their imitation Terra. Forced to work at an inhuman pace, the population of Redemption periodically revolted only to be crushed ruthlessly by the chapter. As the work neared completion and the few remaining veterans of the Heresy could almost stand on the streets of Redemption and be taken in by the illusion of being on old Terra, the planet begin to feel the full force of the system's surrounding warp instability. Riots escalated and chaos driven insanity spread across the planet until many marines either believed they were fighting Horus on Terra or took the guise of Traitor Legions and turned the orbital defense platform on the planet to the simulate the chaos fleets. Seeing the inevitable corruption of the chapter at hand during the height of the fighting, 13 marines (led by a Sergeant Atreus Caesar) commandeered a Thunderhawk and boarded an abandoned frigate in orbit above the planet - the Last Bastion of Faith. The crew had long since abandoned the ship to fight on the surface and it had become a sanctuary of civilian refugees. At the time the 13 marines boarded, cultists were rampaging among the massed refugees. 3 of the marines were lost subjecting the ship. Even without an astropath, the marines reactivated the Last Bastion of Faith's warp engines and left the system even as warp currents engulfed the system. Blindly wandering the warp for centuries, the surviving marines made the decision to rebuild the Chapter and conceal the truth of Redemption. The several thousand refugees abroad were mindwiped. Most became serfs in service to the Chapter (as are their descendents) while those less fortunate were transformed into hulking mutants by accelerated procedures to cultivate gene-seed from the 3 marine casualties.
When the battered frigate finally reestablished contact with the Imperium near Cadia following the Gothic War in 164.M41, the Chapter numbered a little over a hundred marines and serfs descended from the original refugees. Since then, the Chapter has continued to recruit Neophytes from serfs and in the aftermath of war zones, upgrading the Last Bastion of Faith into one of the most formidable battle barges in existence supporting a full complement of 1000 codex mandated marines and serfs crewing the battle fleet. Unusually, the Chapter does not dispatch companies to different conflicts and instead crusades as one roving overwhelming force from one war zone to another. Only the ten most senior Marines in the chapter know the full truth of Redemption. While cleared of any chaos taint, the chapter is still under suspicion by many in the Inquisition for the secretiveness of what had occurred during the hundreds of years in which they were believed to be lost in the warp. To this day, Redemption remains a hellish Daemon World in the Eye of Terror where the Siege of Terra is still being fought and the mad remaining Sons of Terra are overrun again and again without end. The ten senior Sons of Terra adopt the names of the origional ten survivor marines and carry on the dream of one day finding Redemption and cleansing it of chaos. The Chapter's warcry is "We seek Redemption!"
