I have 3 preds and 2 dreads mag'd in the manner you are suggesting...as for the turrets to the preds I just bought extra sprues to avoid having to worry about that part...for general purposes there is a rather well written piece in our own forum here about magnetizing a model, it basically covers the general aspects...for the preds you will need extra sponson bits as WR has stated and then a total of 24 mags per model...
As to the dread, you have to get mags that match the diameter of the arm studs, for best results...cut off half the arm studs and then attach your magnets to the remaining stud and insert one into each of the arm sockets...be sure that the total length of the mags do not exceed the amount of the stud you cut off or they will have a tendancy to let the arms droop. As to the troop models...I'm not sure as I haven't attempted that as yet...I have way too many to even try at this point...but I'm sure once you have the basic concepts down that it will be a simple matter of common sense and a small amount of trial and error...
