There is a battle report in some White Dwarf where a Carnifex takes out two
entire squads of Guardsmen (partially due to the remaining runnin off, but there were at least 7-8 wounds per turn) in two turns with its barbed strangler. That thing is scary.
But overall, I think a shooty Tyranid army is a mistake. They have good shooty units, don't get me wrong, but I think they're just better off having (at most) half shooty, and the rest outfitted for close in envisceration.
