Now if you load out all the thralls to have some CC weapons, we approach an even greater problem, because you are forking over another chunk of points, in my opinion is such a waste. Points can be spent elsewhere on more efficient and effective units

For Example::

If you are wanting resilientness or just more manpower, get 2x standard dreadnoughts, (equipped w/ dred wep + assault cannon?) total = 150 pts. More bodies = more power, and more surviability and effectness.

I agree with Ikarus. Techpriests/Iron Priests are nice for repairing stuff, but it isn't worth it to take them just to repair and protect the thing they're repairing. They have good fighting skills, too, and those points are wasted if you hang back and repair all the time. What you might consider is putting him in a Razorback, outfitting him and the thralls for long-range (if possible... I don't remember what thralls can take, exactly... but this will work for a regular Techpriest), and then at the beginning of the game, move the Razorback to a favorable firing position, have it fire away along with the Priest and the thralls, and if the razorback gets damaged, he can repair it.
