It was a bit un-clear. I wrote it whilst very tired when the inspiration hit. And no, he wouldn't have necessarily died. A throat wound that pierces your windpipe usually kills you via suffocation of your own blood, since you can breathe just fine. However, the power field on a lightning claw cauterizes it. So pretty much it performs a tracheotomy. So basically, he just had an extra hole for air to come through, two to be exact.
STs are not really on the Thunderhawk, that confusion was cause by my sleepyness. I'll try to edit that to make it more clear.
