imo the autocannon is the best all round weapon the guard have access to. it's a jack-of-all-trades gun in that it can do a little of everything, but it's best used for transport popping in my mind, rhinos in particular hate autocannons
also, like grenade launchers, autocannon are just so fluffy for guard armies!
