it all depends on what you want from your army and your play style really...
for example;
- if you like cutting everything in your path into bloody ribbons, go for khorne. good units to make a highly themed force: chaos lord, daemon prince, chosen, terminators w/heavy flamers, possessed, 'zerkers, raptors, bikers, havocs w/meltas or flamers, chaos marines w/only special weapons, predators, defilers, land raiders, dreadnoughts.
- if you want a rock-hard infantry force that will walk through heavy fire as though it were a light rain shower, go for nurgle. good units for a themed force; chaos lord/sorcerer, daemon prince, chosen, terminators w/reaper cannons, plague marines, bikers, havocs w/heavy bolters or special weapons, chaos marines w/heavy bolters & special weapons, predators, defilers, land raiders, dreadnoughts
- if you want a mix of solid mid to close range shooting coupled with good assaulters, plump for slaanesh! good units would be; lord/sorcerer, daemon prince, possessed, chosen, terminators w/lightning claws, noise marines, more noise marines, chaos marines with assault weapons, raptors, bikers, predators, defilers, land raiders, dreadnoughts.
- if you want a force that can shrug off pretty much anything and have a whole new pahse your opponent doesn't have, then go for tzeentch! good units to use; chaos sorcerer, daemon prince, terminators, possessed, tousand sons, chaos marines w/exoctic looking special weapons, 'flying' bikers, 'winged' raptors, havocs w/lascannons (perhaps modeled as a sorcerous cabal?!) possessed predators, defilers, land raiders, dreadnoughts
