for painting a deeper tone of red, basecoat the model in a 50/50 scorched brown/dark flesh mix. then use scab red followed by a final highlight of red gore...
like hairy says, i'd keep to the traditional colours of khorne; red, black & brass.
add things like skulls hanging on chains for some added detail along with lots of protruding spikes for maiming the enemy as you drive over top of the helpless fools!
