well, keep in mind you don't actually "guess" the ranges anymore!
you delcare target as normal, then measure to make sure the target is;
a) over your minimum range.
b) still within your maximum range.
if either range is off, then your shot auto-misses and no scatter/template is used.
otherwise, you scatter as per the rules for firing indirectly. (ie: roll 2D6 & pick highest.)
the main reason i see for taking a direct firing bassie is if you're playing on 4x4 table... with the huge minimum range for the bassie's indirect fire, you'll typically need direct line of sight after turn 2 if you want to shoot anything!
