i definitely suggest balsa or basswood. relatively inexpensive, exact, easy to cut, easy to find.
the only problem with it is getting rid of its "woodiness," ie the wood's natural thread. i don't know if an extra coat of primer would fix that though, hrm...
i'd love to scratch build of those bad boys...:] my inquisitors love traveling in style, haha
