It'd make far more sense to use a mechanical steed, or some sort of light-weight vehicle. Even bicycles make more sense!
Every animal on this planet, as we've seen and heard, have that whole "sixth sense" when it comes to danger. They're really not going to charge into close combat.
Plus, eventually we'd run out of them. Do you realize how large of a breeding/cloning facility they must have to create more and more of these easily expendable IG units? If it was something mechanical, then they could just retrieve it and repair it after a battle.
