I think of the autocannon as more of the 20mm cannon on say a Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle. Slower rate of fire, good against lightly armoured vehicles. I know a .50 cal will penetrate the armor of M113 or BMP but it would be much rarer to destroy such a vehicle with a .50 cal.
