Hm. The sources I have (Lexicanum and Wiki) say that it was taken off a Chaos champion and are unspecific as to when. I don't have my SM codex with me, so I assumed that since the gauntlets were big enough for a Space Marine, I assumed it had to have been a traitor he took them off of. But that's a good point. A fluff inconsistency on GW's part, I think.
