yea I've seen it sorta done before.
Anyways the Pentinent Engines from the Witchhunter's codex look nice. But also what you can do is model it the way your talking about but use human and Tau Battlesuit parts
Then in turn, to include a more human/guardsmen infantry use the Tau Human Auxilleries rules. I believe they are still legal.
