the only things a chaplain ever need are;
- bolt pistol or combi-weapon
- jump pack or terminator armour
- frag grenades & melta bombs if applicable (ie: if you're not wearing termie armour!)
anything beyond that is wasted pts... keep in mind, he already comes with a power toy & a 4+ invulnerable save! he's pretty much set as that's the real basics for an assulty character.
a power fist can be a good investmen however in place of a gun/pistol though when you know you're likely to face a few high T troops such as nurgle chaos armies, iyanden-themed eldar, 'nidzilla lists and similar.
basically, always remember that while your IC's are by far the coolest part of your army, they're never scoring units! thus, they can't claim/contest table quarters or other objectives - so spend as few actual pts on them as possible...
sure you can model them all decked-out with their shiny bionics, termie honours, adamantine mantle and such, but don't pay the pts for the stuff!
