Ok, so, here's the deal. When it says you can have 0-1 Daemonhunters HQ, that means that you may choose one HQ from the Daemonhunters list instead of the Space Marines list. It takes options and equipment from the Daemonhunters Codex only.
I think what's confusing is the notion of a seperate Daemonhunters mini-FOC added onto the normal Space Marine one (i.e. and extra HQ, Elite, Fast Attack, and two extra troops). This is a misconception. By choosing a Daemonhunters HQ, you forego another Space Marine HQ. By compulsory, I mena the required 1 HQ choice all games have. For example, you cannot have a Space Marine force where the only HQ choice is an Inquisitor. There must be a Space Marine HQ, and two Space Marine troops in your army before you can start putting in Allies.
Make more sense?
