Default Re: Sketchup

Google Sketchup was originally intended as an extension of Google Earth, the idea being that users would submit 3D models of buildings all around the world, thus expanding on the 3D nature of topography (ground heights particularly) in Google Earth.

However, because of its relatively intuitive and simple 3D modelling controls to ensure maximum accessibility - it has pretty much become the No.1 piece of free 3D modelling software used for a variety of purposes. People use it to help plan house extensions, do interior design, plan complicated modelling projects, etc, etc.

Personally, I prefer to use Autodesk Inventor for the kind of things Sketchup is used for by hobbyists, but Inventor 1)costs money and 2)even if you "acquire it" for free, its a bit hard to grasp initially unless you're used using to other AutoCAD programs.
