1500 Point battle Space Wolve’s ‘V’ Eldar

The Space wolves had been on planet fall for some 72 hours and had been steadily working their way to the forward positions of the Eldar force. Their acute senses a little reduced due to the toxic industrial environment.

The Eldar force had secured the outlying remains of an old smelting works of the Imperium. This had been a hard fight and where using the buildings to re organise their force.

Rangers who had been deployed earlier with orders to report on enemy movements had sent word back that the wolves where on the prowl and heading in the direction of the main elder force. Unfortunately for the Eldar in the bitter fighting which had taken place a few days before Farseer Fandor had been critically injured and the warlocks had taken him back to a web gate, leaving the remaining force devoid of Psyker power.

The rangers had asked if they should engage the wolves but no one was at hand to change current orders so they watched and reported patiently.

The Mission is Table quarters with extra points for HQ killed and points for total units destroyed.

Battle for Gulip Prime

With the enemy force now getting closer and no sign of the Warloks returning, the Exarch decided that it was time to call on their God for help. Hearing their ancient call the Avatar took the body of one of the selected and broke into this realm.

The Elder deployed first and positioned guardians on the left side with Spiders in support just behind them where the two Vypers. Taking the centre where the Banshees, Avatar and two Wraithlords. On the right are the Dark Reapers and Harlequins. In the forward position in a secluded derelict building the Pathfinders waited patiently.

The Wolves had on their right, positioned a Rhino with grey hunters deployed out of the vehicle, a Whirlwind and the Wolf priest with a jump pack. Taking the centre position was the feared Landrader Crusader with a Command Unit of Terminators. On the Left side a unit of grey hunters secured a Bunker and a further Whirlwind. The acute skills of the wolf scouts had circled behind the Eldar force and where slowly moving to take the elder by surprise.

Turn1
The Eldar surged forward, guardians heading for a deserted sandbag emplacement with the Vypers surging fwd maximum movement, the spiders and Banshees heading to a bunker in the centre of the table. Both the Wraithlords and Avatar move over to the left and around a large centre admin building that the Pathfinders where entrenched. The dark reapers scanned for targets of opportunity finally the Harlequins raced down the right flank moving between an abandoned Hab block.

Firing was short; the only target was a Rhino on the Eldar left which was hit, immobilized and weapon lost.

The Wolvs advanced cautiously the impressive Crusader in the centre moved 6” with the Terminators behind and opened up on the Dark Reapers. When the smoke cleared and the sound of the twin linked Assault cannons had ceased none of the Dark reapers had survived. On the left the Grey Hunters moved from behind the rhino and engaged one of the Vypers only shaking it. Fire from the whirlwinds killed 2 Banshees. A good round for the Wolves.

Turn 2
Again he Guardians moved to the emplacement but ensured that the Scatter Laser could fire at the Grey hunters who had moved around the immobile rhino killing 1 the spiders moved and fired at the same unit killing another 3. One of the Vypers moved around a building for cover ready to attack the Whirlwind the other opened up with 6 x S6 cannon shots and felled the last of the Wolves. The Wraithlords moved to engage the Crusader but failed to penetrate the thick armour. The avatar moved ready to assault the Crusader, firstly loosing the ancient sword but again failing to penetrate. The Harlequins continued the advance on the right and engaged the rhino of the unit in the bunker but failed to do anything. At this point I forgot about hit and run. The Avatar Assaulted the Crusader and with a pitiful show of power and failed to do anything.

Still utilising their honed infiltration skills the scouts where positioning themselves behind Eldar lines. The wolves on the right fired at the Vyper and a weapon was removed. One of the Whirlwinds attacked again the Banshees killing another 3 but they passed the leadership. The other Whirlwind attacked the Pathfinders but all passed the cover saves. The Crusader moved back 6” and opened up on the Wraithlord causing 1 wound. The Terminators fired at the Avatar withstanding most of the shots the final nail was a bolter shot that finally toppled the God. The Grey Hunters had left the safety of their bunker and assaulted the Harlequins on the left seeing them as only lightly armed clowns. The fight was quick one Harlequin fell but not before 3 of the wolves the fight continued (again forgetting hit and run). In the centre the final Terminator attacked the remaining Banshee Exarch, although suffering a wound she fell to a Thunder Hammer blow. Again another good Wolf turn.

Turn 3

The Wraithlords seeing the fall of their God launched a fusillade of Star Cannon and Bright Lances onto the Terminators leaving only 1 member alive. The Vyper destroyed one of the Whirlwinds the other Vyper moved to the centre of the table ready to take the fight to the second Whirlwind. The Guardians still moved to the emplacement (double 1 twice for movement) The Wraithlord unleashed all weapons into the remaining Terminator finally killing him, the other Wraithlord fired at the rhino and blew away its weapon. The Harlequins finished of the remainder of the Grey Hunters and moved towards the Whirlwind.

The Crusader attacked the Harlequins and wiped them from the battlefield only brightly coloured fragments of clothing remaining.

The Whirlwind fired again at the pathfinders but the cover save again ensured no death, the Wolf priest engaged his Jump Pack and assaulted the Warp spiders and killed 2 of the force but they managed to get away and left the Wolf in the open on a distinctly awkward position.

Guardians and Spiders fired at the Priest and finished him off. The Vypers moved again ready on the next turn to fire at the remaining Whirlwind. The other Wraithlord engaged the Crusader and finally destroyed it with a pinpoint strike to its engine core.

Turn4

The Eldar positioned themselves for the final push on the remaining Wolves, the only firing was from the Wraithlord who shot at the remaining Rhino failing to do anything.

The scouts hearing the call and smelling the enemy burst from behind the Eldar lines and fired a melta weapon at the only target visible the Wraithlord, wounding it.

Turn5
One of the Wraithlords turned around and fired at the scouts who had fired at it killing 3, the Pathfinders also opened up and killed another pinning the unit

The Wolves stopped their attack and decided that enough was enough and withdrew from the field.

Only a Whirlwind, a rhino and 2 scouts remained. For the Eldar 10 Guardians Two Wraithlords 5 Pathfinders, 4 Spiders and 2 Vypers.

This was a good battle and I thought my Eldar where going to get a drubbing in the first few turns. This is the first time I have not included a Farseer, I decided on a extra Vyper and extra Harlequins. Some good cover saves helped my Wraithlord survive the shots from the Crusader and not getting my spiders wiped out from assault was useful. Forgetting the rules for the Harlequins was poor, the hit and run and furious assault hopefully this will not happen again.
