1. Guardsmen have strong bonds as well. Look at the Vostroyans.

2. Yes, they probaly can hold out for quite a while. However, the IG will keep assaulting repeatedly until the Marines are whittled down to nothing. You really can't hold off all those guardsmen. If you destroy an entire regiment, there's plenty more whre that came form.

3.Super-heavies, anyone?

4.IG have tons of anit-armour (though admittably less trainded), but still trained enough to use it well.

5. Imperial Guard also have their fair share of experienced warriors. (Vostroya, Cadia, Mordia, Krieg, etc.) The IG can spare more men, resources, and worlds than the Marines, considering that for every marine planet, there's over a thousand worlds that have Imperial Guard.
