best way to come up with background - have a read through history books (especially those focusing on the crusades and the knightly orders such as the templars, teutonic knights, knights hostpitlar and such!)
other great sorces for background are any and all ancient mythology books and reading up on the wars and civilisations upto and through the dark ages! (the bloodier the period, usually the better
