I mix other models in wiht my imperial guard to give a good flavour in my army. I have two squads of guard that use WW2 and modern weapons. I was originally told that i could only use them once because they wouldn't want kids to see stuff on the gaming tables that GW dosn't sell. The rules have now changed at the local battle bunker and they don't really care what models you bring in as long as the majority are GW.
