@munkey joe paints - "Bar" is the York term for a gate in the ancient city walls. In York, a "gate" is a "street", whilst a "bar" is a "gate". Places for convivial consumption of alcohol are "pubs".

Hence, Monkgate is the name of the street. Monkgate Bar is the old gate in the city walls at the end of Monkgate. Follow? No? It took me two years to work it out, so don't feel too bad...
