Oils are actually alot easier to work with over acryllics once you get the hang of it. Blending is so much smoother, and its easier to fix your mistakes. Its mostly because of the fact that oils take forever and a day to dry, its takes several months for certain colors to dry completely.
Im an art major also, and once I started using oils I absolutly refuse to go back to canvas painting with acryllics. I think once you get the chance to push some oils around on canvas you'll fall in love with em aswell.
Somethings to remember are:
-Use paint thinner only to clean you brushes, never to thin your paints with.
- Thin your paints with only turpintine, as it is much more refined then thinner and wont cause your paints to chip later..
- Use high quality and/or student grade brushes to paint with, anything else will just leave bristles on your canvas.
- If youre into mixed media, You can paint with oils over acryllic; however, you cannot paint with acryllics over oil
