I think the change of characters also represents Eisenhorn's changing views. The newer characters don't challenge his radicalism as much (except for Fischig, of course), and this represents the fact that he is conscious, to some extent of his changing methods. They are not as likeable because of Eisenhorn's change. They have to be a bit loose and not as deep to accept the radicalism.
