they are not very commonly played...the dual whammies of 1) butt ugly models and
2) power that is difficult to command well/models that drop like flies if poorly played means that they're just not that popular. at least right now. i know of a few veteran gamers who tote devastating DE armies, capable of carving other armies to ribbons before their opponent can react enough. i think they could use a new dex and a new set of models.
the recent upgrade from similarly butt ugly models of the VC for WHFB is proof, these old armies NEED the face lift. NOW. haha :]
