try an allied daemonhunter inquisitor lord w/psycannon & holocaust... sure the enemy gets an armour save from holocaust, but getting to slap down a S5 pie-plate into a unit locked in combat is plain evil!

also note that the daemonhunter inquisitor can also take a lightning claw which is a god-send for wounding T4 enemies... anything re-rolled is deadly!
as for good close combat within the guard list itself;
a) hardened vet sergeant w/power fist & honourifica imperialis. he's a UC so he can't be picked out. and he's S6!
b) priest. he gives re-rolls to his squad. his only downside being that the squad he's with will always count as moving & he has to be dropping into command squads first so you're forced to risk your valuable officers.
c) rough riders. bit too much of a 'one-shot wonder' unit for my tastes, but you can get a potential 21-23 S5/I5 power weapon attack on the charge. little if anything will survive that!
d) conscript platoon 'o death. using the independant commissars doctrine allows you to stick one int othe conscripts. now can have a 40 strong near fearless tarpit.
basically, you should avoid throwing your officers into combat at all costs because you want them nice and safe so they can give their Ld to the rest of your army!
