Pride is an annoying thing. For the sake of the child if I were you I would apologise and like someone else said. Watch very carefully. He did put his hands on you and hit your in-law but if you can't be there, you can't protect the child. And if things go bad then you need to be there.

So apologise, you don't have to mean it, and keep a close eye on things. Inform the police of what you suspect may be happening and be ready to intervene if things happen again.
