It'd be nearly impossible for me to say anything resembling an apology to him. Just think of the kid. He could grow up to be just like his father if he has no role model. I think it's best if you give this jerk the most meaningless apology. Don't think of it as your submition to him, but more like you spiting him by removing the opportunity to have his child become like him, or get beat.
