Hey guys (gals?)! I've use everything from vallejo color to GW foundation paints, and a few choice others, as well. Some paints work better than others depending upon the application. I usually prefer the higher end acrylics that are designed for miniature painting, but I have also been known to dip into my Liquitex tube acrylics (and even my tattoo ink) on occasion, to acheive some effects. Experiment a little and you'll see what I mean!
As far as airbrushing, I use a 50/50 combination of distilled water and window cleaner or distilled alcohol to thin my paint and have had no problems with solid colors or metalics. Just remember to run some of the thinner mixture through the airbrush occasionally, to keep it cleaned out. My personal favorite 'rig' is a Paasche VL (with a 1 or a 3 tip/needle, as I've found the 5 is a bit too big for anything other than basecoating), hooked to an oiless compressor w/tank & watertrap at around 15 - 20lbs of pressure.
