In the real world,if a machine gun is held straight and level when fired the rounds it puts out will not follow a perfectly stright tragetory they will cover a certain corridoor of fire-and thats from a rifled barrel, an assault cannon is designed to cover a large area with a huge amount of death with minimum effort
