The stands I posted here are the best representation of the work I did. I made 10 stands to represent different degrees of density. The one you see there is considered dense and not passable. Unless you have Wood Elves which cant ignore dense woods.

what I have seen before is a "flag" is posted in the terrain. A flag being a 6 inch stick/sprue glued to a base to represent a model. That way there is nothing to catch on the terrain and in game terms a model cannot be seen and targeted as it is just a stick. you now have a marker for movement and no chance of being a target in dense terrain. the long "stick" is so it is above the terrain for the most part and ease of moving.
