Yeah, the ammo is a small grenade type round. Forgot about that. Aren't they also airburst? Hmmm. I think rounds with super small (maybe nano) guidance systems are not too far away. Science fiction usaully ends up as fact. Tech we have today would seem fantastic to people 30, even 20 years ago.
