DK you are in my thoughts and Prayers (not overly religious in the sence but for you buddy I will talk to the Gods) May whatever higher being you worship Bless you and make this a trial for the many years of Blessed togetherness that you and your wife will share. I am not Christian but one of my favorite stories from Christianity is "Footprints" By Mary Stevenson, which i will post in this response.
Second for your animal...I am a avid suporter of the ASPCA and my wife is a vet tech by one of her trades. I reccommend that you take the Cat to the closest ASPCA shelter and let them take care of your animal. Every ASPCA shelter is full of caring loving people that will care for your cat in the best mannner imagined. Most have Vets on call also and will give your cat the love and care it needs. explain your situation to them and all will be ok.

Footprints in the Sand
One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord. Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.
In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand. Sometimes there were two sets of footprints, other times there was one only.
This bothered me because I noticed that during the low periods of my life, when I was suffering from anguish, sorrow or defeat, I could see only one set of footprints, so I said to the Lord,
“You promised me Lord,
that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I have noticed that during the most trying periods of my life there has only been one set of footprints in the sand. Why, when I needed you most, have you not been there for me?”
The Lord replied, “The years when you have seen only one set of footprints, my child, is when I carried you.”
