DEATHWATCH

The Deathwatch is an elite formation of Adeptus Astartes warriors who serve as the Chamber Militant of the Ordo Xenos of the Inquisition. Each member of the Deathwatch is recruited to the Order from Astartes Chapters and trained specifically to fight the alien menace that faces the Imperium.

Appearance
When a Space Marine is chosen to become an honoured member of the Deathwatch, he ritually repaints his armour black, leaving only his Chapter insignia. This is to ensure that the suit's machine spirit is not angered. The shoulder pad bearing the untouched symbol is then shifted to the right side and the ornate shoulderpad of the Deathwatch replaces it on the Marine's left shoulder, signifying to the enemies of mankind that the Marine serves the Deathwatch first and foremost whilst he is seconded to the Inquisition. The left arm of the Marine is also painted silver to match the Deathwatch pad. When the Marine returns to his chapter, he is allowed to bear the icon of the Deathwatch if he so wishes.

Organisation

The Deathwatch has a number of tasks as the Chamber Militant of the Ordo Xenos. Their primary task is the monitoring and extermination of alien races. Secondary tasks include studying of alien species and the acquisition of their technology for Adeptus Mechanicus' research. This has lead to a number of advances including the C'tan Phase blade, a weapon recovered by Deathwatch Marines from an ancient Necron Tomb world.

The Marines that make up the Deathwatch come from the Space Marine Chapters of the Imperium. Oath-bound by ancient vows, most Chapters make their brethren available to the Deathwatch. It should be noted that the Deathwatch has a mandate that allows it to pick and choose the warriors it wishes to be seconded to its kill teams. This can be awkward for Chapters such as the Dark Angels and Space Wolves who have a long standing fueds

Other Chapters such as the Ultramarines and Imperial Fists enjoy much closer relationships with the Inquisition in general and supply a larger quantity of Marines. Deathwatch Marines share little in common beyond their vows to the Emperor and their expertise in killing aliens and on occasion this can lead to conflict between Marines, a dangerous friction during a campaign or battle. For this reason only the very best warriors of the Astartes are chosen to command Deathwatch teams, their skills and abilities allowing them to exert a control over their disparate troops than a lesser man would be able to.

For this reason it is not uncommon for a Deathwatch squad or small detachment of squads to be led by a Brother-Captain or Librarian where in a regular Chapter a Veteran Sergeant or similar would normally be in command of such a small force. Occasionally, Ordo Xenos Inquisitors will assume direct command of the squad. The squad will remain together until the Inquisitor deems it's task complete. This may take years to acheive. Once complete, the Marines are allowed to return to their chapter, oaths fulfilled.

Combat Doctrine
A Deathwatch Kill Team's mission can range from surveillance conducted by the Kill Team to reinforcing Imperial Forces in open battle agains xenos. To accomplish these goals, the Kill Team is armed with the best equipment that the Imperium can offer. This enables the Kill Team to equip themselves for any missions and any foe.Sometimes not even that is enough to stop the alien. To help with that problem, any Deathwatch marine may requisition any Imperial forces that they deem is needed to complete their mission, ranging from a squad of brother Space Marines to a battleship. This enables the Ordo Xenos to protect the Imperium of Man from the ravages of the alien in whatever form they are in.
