Good to see theres somebody else out there thinking of doing the same... I played fantasy during v.6 but really had a hard time with the flow of the game. However, the thought of doing a skeletal army that won't get me booed (necrons) makes me smile. Since you have the codex, I have some questions for you.

First off, I see a lot of people playing with lots of archers. Why is this the case? Have the rules for shooting changed under this new edition? It seems like BS 2 skeletons will be hitting on either 5's or 6's and wounding on 4's against T3 opponents. Am I wrong? Also, I witnessed a player field an archer unit 4 ranks deep. Can they fire through each other? Under the old rules you could only fire from the front rank unless on a hill, and even then you only get too shoot with your second rank...

It seems to me that these guys are really weak when compare to other armies that can take handguns and crossbows... And even then, shooting is weak compared to hand to hand. What is the real strongpoint of this army (from what you can see?)

Thanks for the imput. I'd be more than happy to help you derive a strategy if you convince me to pick up Fantasy under the new edition.

Well.....Since noone else has tepped up, ill take the roll of "expert"!

Ive been playing Tomb Kings for a year now and i can tell you the reason for all those archers.

Tomb King Archers will always hit on a 5 or a 6. There are no modifiers to ther shooting rolls!

They can shoot at Chameoline Skinks, in hard cover after moving and (usually a -6 modifier) hit on a 5 or a 6!

In the special rules. The reason people rank them is that Tomb King archer units are just as effective in combat as combat skellies, so the ranking is just so when the charge comes, they can take it and scare away the enemies.

Now, a really good start with the Tomb Kings is the Battleforce. It is a very good box. Just pick up a Tomb King in a chariot (he will be a prince) and a liche priest blister and you easily have 750 points!

Then you have to decide on specialist troops. Do you want to go offensive or defensive? Do want to dominate the magic phase (which is extremely easy for tomb kings in 7th edition)? Do i want to slaughter the enemy face to face and allow their own fears to chase them off?

After you answer those questions, you can continue from there. I currently have 5000 points of Tomb Kings including Settra and Khalida! Oh and consider the Khalida army, I can run a 2500 point Khalida army that fields over 100 archers with poisoned arrows! Half of all of your shots will instantly wound! Taking into consideration the 3 liche priests, i can usually fire off 140 arrows a turn! Not much is going to stand up to that!

thanks for the replies folks, i was thinking of including some large blocks of skellie fighters, supported by a block or 2 of archers, catapult and 2 liche priests and a tomb king, but not sure of the specifics yet

I personally have a 3000 point game against lizards in about a week and am looking forward to it!

Tomb king-243 pts
-armour of the ages
-death mask of kharnut
-sword of might
-shield

liche priest-160 pts
-golden ankhra

liche priest-140 pts
-hieratic jar

40 skellie warriors x 2 - 340 each
-full comand
-shields

20 skellie warriors - 160 pts
-bows

10 skellie light horsemen
-bows

19 tomb guard - 258 pts
-full command
-king goes in here

tomb scorpion- 85 pts

screaming skull catapult - 110 pts
-skulls of the foes

1996 pts, so heres my list version 1.0, rip away

Tomb king-243 pts
-armour of the ages
-death mask of kharnut
-sword of might
-shield

I like this format for the King, Hes tough and good at killing. Good Choice

liche priest-160 pts
-golden ankhra

Not exactly my Choice, run him with 2 dispell scrolls, you need them.

liche priest-140 pts
-hieratic jar

Good

40 skellie warriors x 2 - 340 each
-full comand
-shields

So is this 2 units of 40 Skeleton Warriors with hand Weapons and Shields? If so, a bit overkill, Something advisable, Drop 10 from each squad in favor for either another screaming skull catapult and scorpion, or pick up a Tomb Prince (Light armor and Shield, Hes there for My Will be Done and some hitting power in your skellie units) and another Scorpion

20 skellie warriors - 160 pts
-bows

Good

10 skellie light horsemen
-bows

Good

19 tomb guard - 258 pts
-full command
-king goes in here

Like it

tomb scorpion- 85 pts

Love Scorpions

screaming skull catapult - 110 pts
-skulls of the foes

I like skulls of the foe, but its not exactly necessary. But its really up to you.

1996 pts, so heres my list version 1.0, rip away

Overall, a good list, but several things I would change, but even if you dont change them, this list will be scary, 80 skeleton Warriors! 40 man Blocks, OUCH!! Those will take forever to kill, unless youre Khorne.

thanks for critique, but i'm a little surprised that it was mostly good for a first attempt
i'll probably change the golden ankhra for the 2 dispel scrolls, and change up the skellie units to 30 each, but i'll model the extra 20 just in case i want to scare the other guy.... than i'll get fill up the points an extra prince and scorpion

yeah, i know i would be terrified to have to kill that many skeletons!

Yeah, it was a very good list for a first shot. I have learned in games that more than one scorpion is a good thing, they scare opponents, and they are effective units!

It was so much fun. It ended a draw with me in the lead with about 120 points on my opponent. His magic was fairly devastating until my scorpions ate his skink priests!

Yum.....Lizard!

My Tomb King and his charioteers ended up getting flank charged by one extremely peeved Kroxigor who destroyed 2 chariots and then met a sticky end to my King! The game was extremely fun though!

What type of Skaven army does he run (units, sizes, commanders, Clan?)?

Ouchie

Clan pestilens is nasty against Tomb Kings, Their Frenzy makes them immune to our fear and the number of attacks! Owie. They are lacking in the magic department and can be crushed there, but be ready for some casualties! I do have some tactics for anti clan pestilens, so when you get ready to play a game, let me know. Ill help you to hammer out flaws/problems in your game plan and give you some tips on nasty things to do to him!

I meself, Biadetic the diabetic have been thinking about TK ! I love the concept of them although not huge fan on some models (skeletal horses!!!)

Anyways, i was reading thread, pretty interesting, nice advice. But can you effectively run a TK army specifically for certain things? Like shooting / combat/ and for me more importanly, a very effective magic-heavy TK army? :P

I really liked your idea of loads of poisoned arrow archers :P

Thanks ^^

Hey, BUMPing this thread as I'd love some advice

After thinking alot the idea of a Queen Kalida army would be awesome, lots of archers and sticking in screaming skull catapults and a casket of souls seems like it would kick a$$

Anyone got any thoughts on this or alternative idea?
Thanks. ^_^

Everything ! ^_^
I need to start buyig more stuff for my army but i don't really want to buy too much (because I'm in severe financial problesm lol)
so i was thinking about armys.

Firstly, the idea of a Queen Khalida army took my attention, all those poisoned attacks combined with SSc and Casket seems nasty.
But then i read on the internet (its an awful thing :P ) said the key to Tomb Kings is it's mobility ! SO then i was thinking, well Khalida army seems quite defensive so maybe that's not the way to go.

Whats worth heavily investing in ?? Im guessing the scorpions are !
I only have the battalion at the minute along with a handful of tomb guard, a tomb king/prince and my liche priest ^_^

There are a couple of different ways to running a Tomb Kings Army, The highly mobile hard hitting Cavalry Corps led by a Tomb King in a chariot, the Uber Defensive Force led by queen Khalida and packed full of archers and catapults, or the highly flexible armies of the Liche Priests led by a high Priest. I will break them down individually, but that will have to wait until later because I am at school and do not have my book readily available!

Queen Khalida is definately meant for the uber defensive army of Warhammer and works well when being used in Team Games. The Defensive staying power of the TK is great when accentuating the close range capabilities of Ogres or Lizardmen. I advise using her only in those instances, or if you wish to use her and her army, then buy Ogres as DoW to add some hitting power to your force.
