|  my poor, poor easterlings... well, i've learned a very harsh & sad lesson over the corse of our in-store campaign & staff tourny; easterlings, while having what are IMHO the best looking models, are the crapiest army in LotR!  why? well, according to their background, the rhunish peoples are the most fanatically devoted & most highly trained of sauron's troops... okay, all well and fine. but, for an even higher cost than a fighting uruk-hai, the easterling gets... 1 point better defense! too bad they lose out with only fight & strength 3, whereas the uruk has 4's... hell, even morannon orcs are better for less pts. of corse, the easterlings are utterly owned by good forces who either get better cavalry, (rohan), or else have better elite troops for the same pts or only slightly more... rant to continue later... cheers!

sadly though, he's one of those 'kickass on paper but utter crap in-game' characters... he's only got 1 attack + 1 wound. sure he's defense 8, but he's got little fate and he can't use his will to sustain himself?!?  plus like all ringwraiths, he has to give-up a point of will every time he gets into a fight. sure he can 'theoretically' get it back with the life drain rule, but again, 1 attack at S4 isn't that hot so he's not that likely to kill his enemy... my real discontent is the fact that the easterling w/spear & shield - the arcetype of their warriors, costs 10pts for what is basically just a very average stat-line. however, everything else with that same 'human' stat-line is quite a bit cheaper! (those 2 or 3 pts less/model really add up!) to me the real kick-in-the-face from GW is the fact that they made the uruk-hai so godly! 9pts for a fight 4, S4, defense 6 & courage 3 model?!!  at least the mahud are pricier for their abilities...what i's like to see is one of two things when the easterlings *finally* come 'round for an update, who know's when; a) either lower their pts cost to better reflect their merely 'average' abilities b) make their stats 7 rules better reflect their high pts cost! c) give us the other half of our fething army list!!! i'll of corse still paint & play my easterlings, but i really wish GW would get on with trying balance this system as LotR is a great game overall - it was simply writen by monkies who can't hack it as proper games designers. cheers!

They have a ***ping 5 different models, yes, it is VERY sad and I would love for them to get their specialists! It would make them worth their time and I whole heartedly agree that easterlings get ran over like a cheap french u know what by almost every good army who outnumbers you. My minas tirith army is 9 points for the same everything as what your spearmen except the fighting in two ranks. I think they best thing to do though would be to just lower the cost of those spearmen by 1! Then they match minas tirith in every way, points, stats, but they get the one up of fighting in 3 ranks. Their archers and their swordsmen are just as expensive as mine but I have specialist units which gives me a one up on ya! I guess we are just assuming that humans serving sauron cant have specialist troops (well except for the harad because they technically dont devoutly serve sauron so they are allowed to specialise! LOL) I will agree wholeheartedly that you are completely right about this and I share your pain!

| Re: my poor, poor easterlings... i don't mind seeing the spearmen stay at 10pts/model, but give them fight 4! considering the easterlings are supposed to be the most feared & skillful of all sauron's human servents. they should stay as the least numerous, (next to the black numenoreans of corse!) but make them better... i could really care less about the phalanx rule as right now is does crap-all! at best it gives the easterlings a better shot at drawing a fight. typically though, most stuff i face in the area has that fight 4 so i'm still screwed outright. dragon guard i expect will definately get fight 4 + the bodyguard rule. however, their weakness is the fact that they'll suffer if they use those elven blades of theirs! (plus they're even pricier than the spear/shield warrior!) the kataphraks could also use either a slight pts drop to reflect the fact they are nothing more than a basic warrior who's mounted, or else give them a slight pts increase but add some bite to them! (S3 for the most part doesn't cut it for cavalry...) again, those gondor knights have lances which helps them when they win a fight on the charge. plus it makes their heroic fights deadly! kataphraks bounce off more times than not... also IIRC, a gondor knight w/full kit is the same pts cost as a kataphrak too! the siege bow will at least finally add some hard-hitting firepower. the bowmen are fine as they are now, as are the sword/shield warriors. (again, i would easily pay a point or two more for that fight 4!) i don't so much mind the lack of characters, provided they don't butcher khamul's rules in the forthcoming mordor book! (for the love of god, make him decent!!!) in friendly games the easterling king can get away with using the stats of a king of men... however, it would be cool if we were to get another new named character to supliment khamul. (who is currently the biggest waste of the better part of 100+ pts!) cheers!

(ruddy git was moving & shooting with 40+ blowpipes which hit on 3's, kill on 5's and re-roll 1's!)still, there is a small ray of hope for us poor evil-doers; our manager/in-training manager got a sneak peek when they were up at HQ about the possible '08/'09 stuff and there just might be an eastern realms book towards the latter half of '09! of corse, the dirty elves get their stuff first, but i'll still be happy as long as my beloved easterlings get at least a friggin' chance at winning a game!!! cheers!

| Re: my poor, poor easterlings... How dare you try and take the crappiest LotR army award away from my beasts of Dol Guldor list. My army has no defense and expensive models with no courage. I hit broken very quickly and everything in my army runs away. Combined with the Warg Cheiftan who only uses stand fast for other Wargs.

| Re: my poor, poor easterlings... Yeah but I'm a purist. 500 points 1 spider queen, 1 warg cheiftan, 3 bat swarms, 12 wargs, 6 giant spiders. The list of the amazing draw. I actually do well against armies that don't have insano characters and sometimes I do well in certain scenarios.
