Default Beakie head fluff

So, what's the story behind the beakie helmet design? What inspired it, and was it pre-heresy or post-heresy?

I can't remember which MK it is, but IIRC it was developed during or right after the Horus Heresy. Try asking D_C.

it is MK VI (6) and is pre to during heresy.

no idea on the reasoning, but the orks call SMs Beakies because of it.

The only bit of info I can dredge up is from my memory..

It has something to do with improved inter-squad/suit vox equipment as well as increased re-breathers and such in the suits. The vox EQ in MK VII is held in the two rather large tube/studs on either side of the grill of the MK VII helmet, and the grill itself is both an external vox speaker and re-breather unit, hence the less pronounced 'beak'

The MK IV is and example of this, and there is indeed a variant between the VI and VII that looks like a mish-mash of MK VII, MK VI, and MK IV. It is seen on a few very rare and old GW metal SM.

Any chance for a pic of that variant? Also, would the Mk6 be fluffy on Raptors, I sure hope so!

well i know one of the reasons beakie (MKVI) gave way to aquila (MK VII) is because it was hurriedly consturcted towards the end of the heresy. aquila then gave way to the high gorget (collar) of the MK VIII errant armour

heres a link to more detail regarding armour variants: here

when i read the title of the thread i wasnt sure what to expect... beakie head fluff. sounds like chef brian to me.

Thanks for the tip. I think they look good on what I've got built, just need a few more. I was unaware orks called SM "Beakie Boyz". Learn something every day!

with both. Squats were insanely powerful Bike Riding Dwarfs from space.

in reality they were humans who moved closer to the galaxy core and the increased gravity made them shorter but much stronger than normal humans.

Good point.

They also had weapons/vehicles which were basically variants of mining/construction tools if I remember correctly, and an incredibly stupid (and game-degrading) name: Squats. I mean come on!!!

Thankfully they were removed. Forever.

An excerpt from the Fluff Bible:

Quote:
MARK 6
At the same time as production of Mark 4 armor ceased, work began on a long term development program to replace the Mark 4 with a more durable type. The Mark 5, or Corvus Suit, was only ever perceived as a stopgap design. The weapon development workshops on Mars began to experiment with a mixture of new and old technology, making the newer materials more durable where possible. A notable feature of the resulting armor types (Marks 6 and 7) is the provision of dual technology circuits. These permit relatively rare or sophisticated functions to be temporarily replaced or repaired using common or very simple technology. Although development was incomplete the new armor was rushed into production while the forces of Horus advanced throughout the Terran solar system. Hastily equipped Space Marines wore the new style Mark 6 armor into battle while the development laboratories were disassembled and prepared for transfer to Earth. During the Martian campaign forces of Horus eventually overran the production facilities for Space Marine armor and soon began to manufacture new suits for their own use. Consignments were distributed to other forces elsewhere in the galaxy so that this new type of armor became quite widespread. Distinguishing features of the Mark 6 armor are its relatively clean appearance due to rehousing the main power cables under the armor plates. The exterior chest and arm cables are duplicated under the chest plate and automatically isolated from the main system if damaged - thus providing a failsafe and overcoming the vulnerability of the Mark 5. The helmet is an improved version of the Mark 4 rather than a new type, although a new type was under development and was to be used on the Mark 7. The left shoulder armor retains the same construction method as the earlier Mark 5 and for the same reasons. Where supplies of material were short it is the right side of the warrior which needs to be better protected while he fires his weapon, thus the left side could be most easily replaced by slightly less effective plates. The need to economize in this way was very real at the time. Later the studded pad became associated with the Terran campaign and the final heroism of the Space Marines so that it became a traditional emblem of those days.

aww what ? haha when i see squats i give a little bow of respect to the modeller. it's hard to find those models now, and they are one of the greatest marking of the "old-era" of 40k :] lol. and besides, what's cooler than dwarves and their beards ? dwarves and beards in space !

anyhow. this might be a slightly off topic thing, but the thread is titled beakie fluff, so i might as well throw it out there, i believe the raven guard are well known for their corvus [is that what they're called in non-beaky terms ?] helmets being passed down between marines, particularly, i would guess, those in the assault squads/shrike's wing..
