well, some of my favourite black library books/series include;

gaunts ghosts by dan abnett
ultramarines trilogy by graham mcneill
storm of iron by graham mcneill
space wolf series by william king

i've also heard that the eisenhorn trilogy by dan abnett is some of his best stuff! (and that's really saying something )

also, if you're any kind of a backstory purist, avoid anything by cs gotto like it's nurgle's rot!

cheers!

anything by Dan Abnett is good

Eisenhorn Omnibus is a great dectivtive story,

Ghaunts Ghost is a great war story about the last regiment of a world fighting for survivial against enemies within and without,

Storm of Iron Chaos attacks in huge numbers against 3 regiments of guard, and a handful of marines with the backing of a titan legion an 3 divisions of armour meanwhile the Adeptus Mechanicus is slowly poisoning them all.

15 Hours: the story of a huge mistake that sends a single company of soldiers to reinforce a guardsmen town against a huge tide of orcs read along as the sole survivor strives to last the next 15 hours.

Last Chancers: join the 13th Penal Legion of Col. Schaeffer and his Lt. Kage as they travel from world to world assassinating Tau Leaders and destroying entire hives. a great read with a great twist.

those are all great books that i have though im pretty sure that any black library book is bound to be good

Read Eisenhorn last. I was extremely depressed after I read it. Not because of the plot line, oh no, it was because I didn't want to read anything else because I knew it couldn't be as good!

Along with what experiment 626 and MSguardsmen have said, I would also recommend Ciphas Cain novels. They might not be super, but they're at least humorous. It about a commissar who's truly looking out only for his own hide, but ends up doing really heroic stuff and gets lots of fame.

well, i've many very positive comments on them, but it seems there's also a fair few negative comments as well because there are alot of bits apparently that don't closely follow regular background regarding the heresy...
i think the thing you need to keep in mind when reading them, is to remember that the story is being told mainly from the perspective of the traitors. (for example, the narrator is one of horus' lieutenents!)

i haven't yet had the chance to get into them myself as i'm waiting on the 3rd book... but once my book order *finally* arrives i might start reading them, what with the christmas holidays upcoming and all

cheers!

The Horus Heresy books are pretty good although it was quite confusing at first but it becomes a good read after the first few chapters.

I know its not 40k but you have to read the gotrek and felix series! Absolutely brilliant! Follow the adventures of an often inebriated dwarf slayer and his biographer.

The Horus Heresy books are good but as experiment 626 said there are quite alot of negative comments as well but it's not to do with how they're written but more about the accuracy of the fluff. If I was you I'd read the GW fluff on the Heresy before reading these books.

Most of the books mentioned are great especially the Eisenhorn and Ravenor series and I've heard good things about the Soul Drinkers books as well (I waiting to get the omnibus for it)

Horus Heresy:
old stuff like WD issues, rulebooks, dexes... all available off ebay.
new stuff like the HH artbooks and Novels (artbooks are 4, novels are trilogy, for now) available off Black Library depending on issue (some are sold out) and on ebay...
remember that Ebay = whenever someone decides to sell, and keep an eye on their ratings or you might get scammed

The Genevieve books are really good. They may not be 40k but they're still damn good.

If you're looking for a break from Black Library fiction then i recommend checking out Terry Goodkind. His books are an amazing fantasy series that completely blew my mind.

Trust me.

I dont know if anyone's mentioned it, but the Eisenhorn trilogy by Dan Abnett is great. I got it at the weekend (the whole trilogy with connecting stories in one book) for only £9 ($17.7656).

other fun fantasy novels are any that involve the skaven!
it's always a laugh in that if they'd just stop scheming and killing eachother for 15 minutes or so, they'd take over the old world!

try vermintide and skaven slayer. the loathsome ratmen is supposed to be a pretty neat background book as well!

cheers!

hmmmm... sucks 'cause i already own the trilogy!

another book i'd avoid is angels of darkness by gav thorpe. starts off really good, but then like the eldar and craftworld codices, gav blows it big time!
(honestly, he's a nice guy and all, but when he messes something up he *really* makes a mess )

i've heard alot of good things about his last chancers books though - i'm simply too busy to keep up with more than 4 or 5 series!

cheers!

And why, exactly, is the Inquisition War Trilogy bad? (NOTE: I haven't read them, and thankfully I beleive thanks to some of the comments)

i cant say. for one theyre very old, maybe 15 years (not that thats a bad thing - one of my all-time fave gw books is drachenfels, which is as old) and 40k fluff hadnt been well-developed at the time and theres a lot of dead-fluff and things that dont make sense now.

most mostly its the way its written, very boring, unrealistic. the callidus is (in my opinion) nothing like what a real callidus should be like (she has emotions! and talks like a normal person which is sonething i dont imagine callidus's doing when not on missions). the squat provides more comic releaf than gimlis, which is just another nail in the coffin for squat credibility.

i just dont like it. who knows it might be me, and its actually a great book, but i struggled to get to page 100 and never got ****her

Dan Abnett rules BL!!
Sorry, had to be said. All his books rock. Although I found Ravenor to be a bit of a let down, as he's supposed to be smart and powerfully psychic but him and his team seem to get the snot kicked out of them quite a few times. And I wonder whatever happened to Eisenhorn?

I was dubious about Ciaphas Cain until I read the books. They've got some real lol moments and its got a different twist to most 40k books. Its more upbeat.

I enjoy Eisenhorn, Gaunt's Ghosts, and the Ciaphas Cain novels, but for different reasons. Eisnehorn is thrilling and exciting, the Ghosts are simply interesting stories, and Cain is, like commissarwhiffy said, upbeat and humorous.

As for what happened to Eisenhorn, I think it is supposed to go on in the Inquisitor game, but there's no real storyline. I think it's good that Abnett ended it where he did because otherwise it might be like Gaunt's Ghosts: interesting reads, but gets a little repetitive after a while.

I found the first book in the new GG series, 'His Last Command' to be a bit darker than the old GG books. Their experiences on Herodor has changed them and Gaunt seems to be a very different man. Could make for an interesting twist and liven things up for them. And that makes for troops from 3 worlds in the regiment. Conversions anyone?

So I've heard. I can't wait to read it! I've actually read them out of order, so I'm reading Necropolis right now. It's very interesting.

The Ultramarines Omnibus is also pretty ok. Not nearly as good as Eisenhorn, mind everyone, but pretty ok. Worth reading, shall we say. There's the awakening of the Nightbringer, the Tyranid attack on Ichar IV (is was Ichar IV, right?), and Uriel Ventris and his trusted sergeant get ousted from the Ultramarines to go hunt through the Eye of Terror. Crazy stuff. I think I liked them in order that they were, Nightbringer best, Warriors of Ultramar second, and Dead Sky, Black Sun least.

One series that I didn't find all that great was The Last Chancers Omnibus. The first one was good, the second was kinda iffy, and the last was just wierd and kinda bad. Not on my recommended list...
