well what army, what background?

we are going to need more information before we are able to help.

even with two of the same armies, the background can differ - case in point: IG

you can have 2 armies taking exactly the same options, but totally different backgound - one may be tallarn, one may be valhallan. the name you choose for the tallarn should be entirely different to the valhallan.

same with Space Marines - a Space wolf is going to have a very different name to an Ultramarine to a blood angel for instance

Here is my technique. Grab a news paper or something with a lot of letters on it. Roll a die or two. That is how many letters you are going to grab. Then close your eyes and take a pen and hit a random letter on the newspaper. Then you take your letters and rearrange them and remove any that you want to remove. You should be able to come up with something cool that you like. I got the name of my regiments planet that way. Targes.

I have an evil name so terrifying, so monstrous your opponant my just flee the room at the sound it......Timmy!

Personally I like history as a source, like one of my captains is named Hadrian after the roman emperor. Or I use old names too, like my chaplain is named Cornelius. They just have such nice rings to them!

All my troops/commanders/other characters have Germanic sounding names since I theme my armies on the German Miltary. I also have a few though that I've picked up form all over the place of characters I like from various other media as well as history. The best advice I can give you is think of someone/thing that you identify your character with and see if you cant use that as a name. Also check out the sample name sections we have in the army sections of this forum.

personally I go for a root theme (latin, celtic, russian etc) and then get a butt load of names and distribute them to my force. In the case of my Penitent Knights most of the troopers hold latinised names of people I know.

Keyser Soze took all his names from the cup and the bulletin board. I take my names from ordinary stuff, and transpose letters until it sounds like I want it to.
