A new chapter?

I was just wondering is it possible to create a wholly new sm chapter or does it have to be a successor?

I ask this because, on paper at least, I have a new chapter!

It has to be a successor, all chapters are successors of the original legions (not always the loyalist ones!), with the, possibly, unique exception of the Grey Knights.

The "Cursed" Founding chapters all have tampered, altered, or wholly hybrid seeds.

Take the Lamenters for example:

They are a Blood Angels successor chapter and yet they are unaffected by the Black Rage or Red Thirst that plagues their brethren. Its theorized by Imperial scholars that in the time of the cursed founding the geneticists and biologists of the imperium sought to uncover the secrets of the Emperor's great work by experimenting tirelessly on the existing gene stocks. The results were Chapters like the Black Dragons, Flame Falcons, and Lamenters. All blessed with exceptional physical forms, slightly better even then the other chapters but at the same time horribly cursed. The big E probably could of made marines like the Cursed Founding Marines but foresaw the consequences of pushing their genetics too far. The Lamenters have an aura of sadness and despair that is quite palpable. They are always in the wrong place at the wrong time; case in point: They were the first marines to "Discover" hive fleet Kraken, costing them 3/4 of their chapter. The Black Dragons have defective osmodia glands which control the bone growth of a young marine. The worst cases grow spiny ridges on their heads and other parts of their bodies, even extended long bones in their forearms which protrude through the afflicted's skin. The chapter actually sharpens these growths and uses them as close combat weapons. The Flame Falcons are on average 7'6"-8' tall, on the larger end for even space marines. Their chapter was hugely successful until all their veterans burst into flames. The irony is that they did not die but rather fought on as marines encased in an inferno, the flames burning everything but themselves. The chapter saw this as a blessing from the emperor and celebrated but the Inquisition saw it as mutation and purged them.

Well that's just it my chapter is altered but in a good way.

So here it goes:

Name: Incendia Proeliatoris (aka Fire Warriors)

Their geneseed is unknown because they are all converts, altered by their chapter's master.

His story goes as such:
A group of SM crashed on a dead star, all died save one Brother Cornelius. Wandering half dead he falls before a crater filled with magma, when suddenly from the pool a man appears wreathed in white flames adorned in black obsidian armour weilding a massive hammer. Seeing him Cornelius rises to fight but is struck to his knees by the man. The man laughs and says "you are a fool to strike at me, surrender or die" but Cornelius rises again "I am a space marine and I do not surrender" and charges again and is struck down again. "You are brave for one so weak" the man says "whom do you serve", "the emperor" says Conelius. "I deem you worthy, rise" the man says, "worthy?" Cornelius asked. "I am Mulciber and I know of your emperor, and his enemies are mine as well, so you are worthy, worthy of my gift" with that Mulciber laid his hammer before Cornelius and said "take my hammer and smote thy enimies to cinders". Cornelius picked up the hammer but was engulfed by flames and in his pain let forth a yell and then passed out. In his dreams he lay in a void and a voice spoke to him "you will go forth and gain followers, touch them with my hammer and they will be like you. Fire shall be your banner and shall be your tool to strike down your enemies. Now awaken Cornelius Incendia." Cornelius awoke and Mulciber was gone but in his hand was the hammer, and he stood with new found strength his armour scorched. His eyes glowed as he raised the hammer on high and shouted "I name this weapon Vulcan's hammer" smashed it to the ground with the sound of thunder and the ground split and fire burst forth. He returned to the wreckage of his craft and using a distress beacon left that place to find his followers.

Skip ahead, he returns and they make that place their home.

Enough fluff! Now as the story says the chapter master is Cornlius Incendia and his weapon is a bit of a special weapon. It's a power hammer and can be used as a flamer (not even sure if that's legal). Honostly I don't see why not as every master has some uber weapon.

Their armour colour is just a metal colour with scorched legs and hands. They favour flamers but their normal troops carry bolters of course.

Ask me anything else that needs clarifying, whew that was tall piece of typing!

If that chapter works the way I think it does in recruiting marines, they would have been hunted out and purged by the Inquisition (and numerous SM chapters) long ago as a serious danger and threat to the stability of the Adeptus Astartes.

Unless of course this was a choas/renegades list, in which case it would be perfectly acceptible. You can easly use the CSM army list to represent excommunicated but still loyalist chapters, it just represents their being cut off from imperial society and resources.

Vulcan's hammer is actually a two handed deal, and can strike an enemy or the ground (in which case you use a flamer template).

The recruitment of marines is voluntary, Cornelius Incendia goes around preaching his belief and lets them come to him and then bestows upon them the blessing of Mulciber, pretty much changing their genes to that of his own. There's no evil plot to it.

But you're right I could change them to chaos very easily, probably wouldn't be a bad idea with my growing army of ultramarines!

Sorry, but when I hear "Fire Warriors", I think of TAU. Wait 'til the Ordo Xenos gets a hold of that.

As for your fluff, it borders on greatness. The chapter could still be based on Ultramarine or Salamanders geneseed. And, you can wait to see how the story unfolds, like when they are hunted by Deathwatch, and have to turn Renegade to survive. They aren't really Choatic, but they aren't readily accepted by the Loyalist chapters after the Inquisition puts up the Wanted poster.

And, who is Keyser Soze, I mean Mulciber?

Mulciber appears to Conelius as a man but little is known of his true being.(I'm actually cosidering making Mulciber a daemon of some sort it would work well after all). The name I got from a roman name for vulcan, the god of fire and metal working, which means "smithy".

Fire Warriors is only the translation of their name and is justly so as they prefer fire as a weapon, as was told to Conelius by Mulciber "Fire shall be your banner and shall be your tool to strike down your enemies".

Actually the inquisition was always a bit of a enemy to them. For one the Incendia Proeliatoris are a cult and another in the travels of Cornelius Incendia the inquisition starts to think he is possessed, and there fore fear him.

I'm telling you the more I think about these guys the more they seem like chaos marines.

Maybe not Choas Space Marines as such, but definitely Renegades. That way, you can use either Dex to present your army.

CSM usually have a Mark of Chaos. Renegades, like the Red Corsairs may or may not have the mark of Chaos, but are still not loyal to the Emperor. They are in the game for $$$ and Glory, but have no one telling them what to do, or who to fight. They'll attack anybody. Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me!

Well that would be them, but not for those reasons. They are a cult, as Cornlius preaches like a cult leader. The whole "I've seen visions" and "fallow me and i'll lead you to glory". Imagine if you will Kane from poltergeist 2, that kind of thing.

They diffinatly hate orks, tyranids, and the inquisition. Though I don't know if they could work with CSM or SM at all.

Quite so Rhaalidor, though you would probably also play an excommunicated chapter with the CSM list as well, just without any marks or chaos-specific units like defilers, oblitoraters, daemons, noise marines, etc.
An example of such would be the Flaming Falcons from the cursed founding, who while they are reviled and hunted down by the Inquisition for complete eradication, they still for the most part, or at least to begin with, follow and worship the Emperor.

If I were playing a chapter such as yours, I would use the SM codex, and just call your chapter Renegades until such time as the Emperor decides to give them penance and accept them back into the fold.

Well I'm not sure that could work because even though they are loyal to the emperor and kill his enemies in his name they are still a cult who worship Mulciber. Not to mention they consist soley of coverts from other chapters, as well as being hunted for annihilation by the inquisition.

I mean that is a razors edge at the least, mabey even somewhat machiavellian.

Cornelius is good. Keep it and your fluff, and just figure out whether you'll use a CSM or SM list, or, what the heck, make a list with each Dex and see which plays the best for you.

Well it's a good thing it isn't my last name, but you can go ahead and steal it as I don't own it. Believe me I can think of a thousand names, like Ezekiel is also in the running for the characters name.

With CSM though I've noticed their armour is designed towards a specific god, so how could I create an army that isn't?
